We’re back from vacation.
Some great things about Florida:
- Real seafood — catching crabs with a net and cooking them, and finding some quality local restaurants
- Sea kayaking — from our best estimates based on Google Earth, we paddled over 5 miles that day!
- Walking on the beach and looking for shells (and colorful broken pieces that might make a good mosaic)
Some not-so-great things:
- Sunburned shins — apparently this is possible when you’re kayaking and careless about applying shin sunscreen
- Sting rays hiding in the sand — they’re painful
- Scary backwoods Florida hospitals, and walk-in clinics that claim to do wound care but won’t give tetanus shots — neither of which I will spend money on
So about those last two points… I’m not dead yet, and it really was a great vacation. I’ll post a few more pics soon.

is that island behind you in the last picture Alcatraz? I think that’s more than five miles. anyway, looking at these pics makes me really miss you two! let’s hear a little more about that hospital..
You were in Florida and didn’t look us up?!?!?! But then, we are a bit out of the way (128 miles off the mainland. . . ) Sounds like you had some fun adventures!
acb: how did you find out? actually, our ‘vacation’ was imprisonment by the government because of a big-time exposé I’m going to post on my blog. That picture is just after we valiantly escaped and paddled to the mainland from Alcatraz. You only think they don’t use it as a prison anymore. We miss you, too! Our guest room is always available… I’ll post some more about the hospital soon.
L: actually, right after we escaped from Alcatraz and took that picture, we tried to kayak from the panhandle down to you guys in the Keys and lay low for a little while before seeking asylum in Cuba. But after about 200 miles Sharon reminded me that they probably wouldn’t have broadband or Starbucks in our rural Cuban hideaway, so I paddled home.
Big Brother: This is just a joke. You heard nothing, you saw nothing.
