Those of you who have been following my Facebook or Twitter ravings probably already know how much I have been enjoying Gungor‘s new album, Beautiful Things. I’m not going to try to describe it to you, except to say that it is diverse, interesting, and worth your time… so go buy it. :)

We used the title track from this album behind a video we made recently. Our church just finished the series “Prodigal God” based on the book by Tim Keller. The final message in the series is both a celebration and an invitation: “Come to the Table”. It’s about how God rescued us and invited us to feast, just as the father did in Jesus’ parable. He redeems our failures, turning our dust and ashes into beautiful things—an infinitely costly, divine alchemy. It has always been that way; from the moment he formed Adam from dust to the Great Redemption Of All Things at the end of time, what our God touches is transformed. We showed this video just before we celebrated communion together.

Credit where credit is due: The sand artist footage is Mark Demel performing at Willow Creek; that footage is available here. The time-lapse flowers are courtesy of stopchiyski from this amazing youtube video. The music, as I said above, is “Beautiful Things” by Gungor. The main points of posting this are: 1) to get churches and creative arts folks thinking about creative ways to collage/reuse older material like we did with this sand painting footage, and 2) to convince you to go buy Gungor’s new album. :)

We showed this as part of our Advent Conspiracy sermon series, which challenges what Christmas has become in USAmerican culture. Thanks to Tanya for acting, Jackie for script-writing, and Kenneth for manning the microphone boom!

Advent Conspiracy is a movement promoting a different kind of Christmas, one in which we give presence, not presents. You can find out more about Advent Conspiracy at their website, http://www.adventconspiracy.org.

Below are some videos from the great tutorial he did for us. We’ll be getting the LS9-32, which has 32 channels instead of 16, but the general idea is the same. I’ll keep adding parts as I edit them.

Part 1: basic controls & EQ functions

Part 2: the home view, more EQ features, storing/copying settings, and monitor layers

Part 3: the home (channel) view in more depth, including the LS9′s built-in compression/limiting

One of the sermons in our “the world is Mine” stewardship series was on stewardship of authority. God has given everyone authority to various degrees, and you probably have more than you think. How do you use it wisely in the Kingdom?

This video, entitled “The Art of Delegation”, was used as a funny intro to the main part of the sermon. Thanks to Brian, Tyler, Katie, Casey, and Milly for acting and Amy for handling the microphone boom and not washing her dishes. For anyone who is interested, the soundtrack was composed using Reason for drums & loopy FX, a Godin Solidac & Boss GT-8 for guitar and effects, and Audacity for multitracking.
